Interior Protection and Long Life

Obviously, by looking at condition of any vehicle or boat, especially the interior gives you some insight as to the overall level of care. Although time regardless of care does take its toll depending on the exposure to nature, such as moisture, sun light, even body oils and suntan lotions can take their toll on high grade materials. I have learned that the worst case scenarios take place with dirty surfaces. For the most part a clean and well cared for interior even in a marine environment can last for well over 30 years or more. If you don’t believe me take a close look at my pictures of my 1983 Chris Craft Scorpion. Many times I am asked how long ago I replaced the interior. In most cases they are astonished that I never have!

My secret is warm water and good dish soap, scrub the surfaces lightly, rinse and yep, despite all the bad press, I use Armor All Original Protectant exclusively since I have owned boat for the last 25 years. I wash and prep the interior in the spring, treat the vinyl on hot days when the sun literally softens the material (and leather) and soaks up the treatment. I keep the boat fully covered on days of non-use and in the fall repeat my spring treatment, storing the pieces that can be removed from the boat in a clean, warm, dry environment. In all cases I have seen major aging in units that are only a few years old due to neglect.

The other issue that I see with boat owners is the fact that they think that since a boat goes in the water that the interior is impervious to moisture. This is a real misgiving, carpets, cushions, all materials do and will build up dirt and mold as well as break down under moisture conditions. Water trapped in even marine grade woods will also breakdown over time. And did you know that even fiberglass is not impervious to water.

Thus keeping your boat or interior of your ride dry, clean, and protected will guarantee a long and happy life.
